Welcome to BSPS Area 4A Derbyshire Area

Shows

Area 4A holds four shows a year. One is held in the Winter at Barleyfields Equestrian Centre, Ashes Lane, Etwall, Derbyshire.

A second Spring Spectacular is held at Rodbaston Equestrian Centre, Penkridge, Staffs. This show has major RIHS qualifiers for WHP, SHP, Intermediates, Pretty Polly, First Ridden and many others. It will be held on 18th April 2010, and 17th April 2011.

A further Summer Show is held in August each year outdoors at Barleyfields Equestrian Centre. A final Autumn Novice Show is again held at Barleyfields, generally in October each year.

Other shows are held as required relating to weather and other situations.

The committee members and our volunteer stewards work very hard at the shows that 4A arranges each year. We really do need more help on show days when it is the same people usually doing all the work. Have you please got some time to help?

Safety Statement

BSPS AREA 4

HEALTH & SAFETY MISSION STATEMENT

AT ALL AREA COMPETITION EVENTS

OBJECTIVE

BSPS Area 4A‘s prime objective is to ensure that its’ equine competitions and events are conducted in a manner which reduces risk of injury to as low as is reasonably

practicable to competitors, their connections (owners, grooms etc), event officials and members of the general public

RISK ASSESSMENT

Given the known unpredictability of any pony or horse when being ridden or handled, a key factor in meeting the above objective is risk assessment.

A number of risk assessments have been carried out by Area 4A and documented to identify hazards which might occur and how such hazards and risk of exposure to them may be minimised and include such activities as involving the interface between people, equine and other animals in the course of any competition or event, e.g. vehicles.

CONTROLLING RISK

A number of control measures have been adopted to ensure that the prime objective of this mission statement is achieved particularly in reducing as far as is reasonably practicable the interface between horses and vehicles. The main control measures are listed below. Reference should also be made to specific documented details in the appropriate risk assessment regarding hazards identified and control measures applied.

1.      Stewards, judges and other officials are briefed in their duties and are required to bring to the attention of the Area 4A committee any concerns they may have for the health and safety of the competitors, their connections, the public and any officials.  They are also required to conduct themselves in such a manner so as not to put their self or anyone at else at risk and maintain control of the area around their location.

2.      Vehicles of all types must be parked as directed by event officials. Such officials must wear high visibility clothing.

3.      Wherever possible “ horse walks” should be utilised to segregate people and ponies.

4.  Ponies must only be exercised/warmed up in specific areas identified for this purpose. Lungeing of ponies must not be carried out unless specific permission is obtained from an Area 4A official and there is suitable area available.

5.  Prior to any competition or event the Director and committee members review the equestrian site’s own rules in respect of health and safety for events held on the site.

COMMUNICATION

BSPS 4A ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that the aims and objectives of this mission statement and control measures (rules) are brought to the attention of all attendees of any competition or event by means of competition schedules and various notices posted at the equestrian venue.

REVIEW

This mission statement and the risk assessments and control measures are reviewed annually by the BSPS 4A Director and members of the committee on an annual basis.
